mom with a son who has eczema

Posted in Group:

my son was born with it and he and I have been struggling with it ever since. He is 14 years old now and just last year, he went into a severe breakdown. he broke out all over his body. I took him to the ER 5 times and all doctors gave different methods on how to take care of it. Finally we got to see an allergy specialist, and a dermatology. He was so badly in pain because of the open wounds created by him scratching. With his eczema, he went and tried different medications and steroids that the doctor prescribed and the unfortunate thing happens, he ended up having cataracts on both side of his eyes. His left eye was so bad, we got the surgery done before he went blind. I didn't catch it in time when he was complaining because I thought it was due to him slapping his face since he couldn't scratch it but when we got to see the specialist it was too late to treat it. My son ended up having surgery this year for his eyes, he has to wear glasses for the rest of his life and he might need another surgery later on in life. My son is still unable to read books unless its magnified and his left eye is partially blind. The steroids he took is what caused it (Prednisone). He was on high dosage for about a week to control his swelling on his face at one point that I didn't realize he has been taking it off and on during the last 4 years of his life and because for a month straight of taking the meds, it damaged him. After the surgery we are still dealing with his eczema, its not so bad like before. We found out he is allergic to alot of food and the common mold and dogs. He gets shots weekly but we still can't maintain his itching. Once a month he will have a bad breakout that, he can't sleep for days and he would scratch so bad that he is unable to got to school . He is on a special program for school but that alone can't help better his education. With being 14 and 8th grade, alot has happen to him. Also one of the major cause of his breakouts, is his anxiety and stress. We got him to see a therapist and was diagnose with (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) PTSD, Life for him just doesn't get any better. he has 1 friend that visits him once a month, and the only social life he has and outlet is his XBOX life with other players. I feel like a nurse more than a mother. He wants to get out there but he can't even stay inside walmart or restaurant longer than 30 min. I don't know what else I can do, I'm running out of answers to help him.

This sounds extremely awful and painful!!!!!! My friend's son had eczema extremely bad-not to the level of your son, but very bad. Anyway, she took him to a eczema treatment facility as nothing that his peditrician, allergist or dermatologist were prescribing was helping. He came back a changed boy! Things still are good today. Here is a list of the top ten treatment centers in the US:

1. American Academy of Dermatology
2. National Eczema Association for Science and Education
3. Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
4. UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre
5. University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, Ann Arbor
6. Cleveland clinic
7. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
8. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre, Los Angeles
9. New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
10. Duke University Medical Centre, Durham, N.C

Hope this helps!

I joined this support group because our three-year-old grandson has severe eczema. Neither he, nor his parents are getting the sleep they need. Both parents work and they had to hire a nanny to keep him in the daytime. The whole family is terribly stressed. I have recently heard about the Jewish Hospital in Denver. If anyone has had experience there, please share your information.
Thanks
